Shoo Fly is one of the seventeen blocks considered to be part of the communication system used by the Underground Railroad.

Although unproven, many believe that quilts were hung on clotheslines and draped over porch railings to send messages to fleeing slaves.

As the slaves traveled north, spotting a quilt made with the Shoo Fly pattern allowed the slaves to identify a person that might guide or help them; a person who helped slaves escape along the Underground Railroad and knew the codes.

This quilt-in-the-hoop block has also  been published as:

“The Eight-Cornered Box”, (The American Farmer 1896)

“Fence Row, (Kansas City Star, 1931)

“Fifty-Four Forty or Fight”, Nancy Cabot, Chicago City Tribune
