Description
Although unproven, many believe that quilts were hung on clotheslines and draped over porch railings to send messages to fleeing slaves.
As the slaves traveled north, spotting a quilt made with the Shoo Fly pattern allowed the slaves to identify a person that might guide or help them; a person who helped slaves escape along the Underground Railroad and knew the codes.
